Stop Swimming Upstream
Dearest Deep Unwind friends,

Firstly, thank you.

To each of you who walks through the studio and entrusts me or Kyron with your body, and to those who take the time to read these newsletters each month I am deeply grateful.

Recently, I had a conversation with a client that stayed with me.

We were talking about our shared love of rivers. In fact, rivers seem to be a bit of a theme popping up in my life lately.

Not long before this conversation, I had been catching up with a close friend. He shared a beautiful metaphor about a great love in his life, and how perhaps they were simply at different parts of the river of their lives.

I held that metaphor in my heart. I knew it too well.

Then, not long after, my client and I were talking about our love of rivers. I asked him what it was about them that he loved so much.

“Rivers are beautiful metaphors for life,” he said.

There it was again.

Rivers, like life, meander and change. There are calm stretches and rough ones. Sometimes we are carried easily by the current, and sometimes we find ourselves fighting against it.

For months now, I’ve felt the Clyde River calling me back.A place I find deep restoration. I’ve been itching to pack the car, head south and find myself back at Site Six beside the River, beneath the eucalyptus trees.

But life has been lifting and I haven’t found the time.

Slowly, I have begun to feel it in my body and mind though. Less patience. More rumination. Small things feel bigger than they normally would.

My body was telling me I was reaching my edges.

I needed a break.I needed some restoration.

But I couldn’t take one. There were teenagers studying for HSC, work, finances and responsibilities. Right now, I couldn’t stop life or get away from it.

But I could stop adding pressure to it.

And I could intentionally look for where I might create some restoration within the life I was already living.

So I asked myself:

What can I eliminate?

What can I reduce?

What can I increase?

What do I want to cultivate?

And then I acted on the answers.

This newsletter is late because of it.

Rather than pushing myself to finish it because September had arrived, I let it be late.

A tiny decision, perhaps.

But restoration doesn’t always mean a retreat, a holiday or escaping our lives.

The question becomes when we are managing a lot, how do we implement small changes that support.

Sometimes it's simply noticing where we're swimming against the current, and choosing differently.

Maybe we turn onto our backs for a moment and let the river carry us.

So this month, rather than giving you more to do, I’ll leave you with one question:

Where in your life are you swimming upstream and what might happen if you stopped?

With love,
Georgie x
