July Unwind
What is nervous system regulation, really?
It’s everywhere.
Instagram.
Podcasts.
Wellness retreats.
“Go regulate your nervous system.”
But what does that actually mean?
And perhaps an even better question is…
How do you know if your nervous system even needs regulating?
Do you ever find yourself lying in bed exhausted, yet unable to switch off?
Do you spend more time anticipating life than actually living it?
Or notice your body bracing for conversations, appointments or situations that haven’t even happened yet?
These aren’t signs that you’re failing.
They may simply be signs that your nervous system has become very good at preparing you for what it thinks is coming next.
There was a period in my own life when my body seemed to be constantly anticipating.
My mind knew things were okay, but my nervous system hadn’t caught up. No amount of “switching off” seemed to create lasting change. Looking back, I realised I wasn’t failing at self care. I simply didn’t yet understand what my nervous system needed.
One of the biggest lessons I’ve learnt through my studies is that our brains are prediction machines. Every moment, they’re using past experiences to anticipate what might happen next.
Most of the time, that’s incredibly helpful.
But after prolonged stress, uncertainty or overwhelm, the brain can become incredibly efficient at predicting challenges even when the challenge isn’t actually in front of us.
That’s why you might feel anxious before a meeting that hasn’t happened, tense before opening your emails, or exhausted before the day has even begun.
Your nervous system isn’t trying to make your life difficult.
It’s trying to prepare you for what it predicts is coming next.
The goal isn’t to stop your brain predicting.
It’s to help it update those predictions.
And that doesn’t happen overnight.
Not once.
Not from a weekend away.
Not from a single massage.
But through repeated experiences that gradually teach the brain and body:
“This moment is different.”
“I have more capacity than my nervous system currently predicts.”
“I don’t need to stay on constant alert.”
That learning might come through breath, movement, therapeutic touch, learning to notice your body’s signals, and gradually building your capacity to stay present when life feels challenging.
This is why nervous system regulation isn’t about becoming calm all the time.
It’s about building capacity.
The capacity to settle when it’s time to rest.
To mobilise when life asks something of us.
To recover after stress.
To shift rather than get stuck.
To stay present with discomfort instead of immediately reacting.
To move through life’s inevitable ups and downs with greater flexibility.
Massage, rest and time away absolutely matter. They create moments of restoration, awareness and connection. But lasting change rarely comes from those things alone. It comes from gradually giving your nervous system new experiences that allow it to update its predictions and respond more flexibly to life.
Over the past year, this understanding has fundamentally changed the way I think about my work.
Massage remains a powerful place to begin. It can create awareness, offer relief, and provide a felt experience of connection with your body.
But increasingly, I’m interested in helping people build something more enduring: the capacity to understand their nervous system, respond to it with curiosity, and develop practical skills they can use long after they leave the treatment room.
A small invitation
I’ll be bringing this work into the studio with a group workshop soon.

Building Capacity:
Learning to Work With Your Nervous System
It will be a practical workshop exploring how breath, body awareness and gentle movement can help you better understand your nervous system and respond more flexibly to everyday stress.
Together, we’ll explore simple, evidence-informed practices to help you recognise your own patterns, build capacity, and develop a more resilient relationship with stress.
The aim will be to leave with a deeper understanding of your own nervous system and practical tools you can continue using in everyday life.
I’ll share more details soon.

In the meantime, I’ve included a complimentary Progressive Muscle Relaxation audio below. It’s one of the practices I often recommend as a gentle starting point for reconnecting with your body..
One of the challenges with prolonged stress is that we often become so accustomed to carrying tension that we stop noticing it’s there. Over time, this creates “noise” in the nervous system, making it harder to accurately interpret what our body is telling us.
Progressive Muscle Relaxation gently guides you through contracting and then releasing different muscle groups, helping you become more aware of where you’re holding tension and what genuine relaxation actually feels like.
The goal isn’t simply to relax.
It’s to reduce some of that internal “noise,” improve your awareness of your body, support easier breathing, and create the conditions for your nervous system to begin responding with greater flexibility.
Find somewhere comfortable, allow yourself 15–20 minutes, and simply follow along.
I hope you enjoy it.
Remember, a regulated nervous system is one that can adapt, recover, stay present, and find its way back after life’s inevitable challenges.

Breathwork Workshop
Something new is coming to the studio
We're planning an in-studio breathwork workshop, likely a 2-hour session on a Saturday. It's a chance to slow right down together, supporting nervous system regulation, deep relaxation and a real emotional reset.
Details are still being finalised, but if this sounds like something you'd love to be part of, hit reply and let us know you're interested. We'll add you to the early interest list so you hear first.

The body knows how to restore itself. Sometimes it just needs help feeling safe enough to begin.
